I got this to replace a butter bell I had bought several years ago but recently broke. The one I had had a glossy glaze finish and I was frustrated and disappointed to find that that option has apparently been discontinued. So, begrudgingly, I bought the matt version since I can't do without a butter bell. When it arrived I was surprised how much I liked the matt look. it's not truly dull or flat and does have a little shine to it. I'm still sorry my original bell of many years got broken but I do like this new matt option and it goes well with the rest of my kitchen.As for product itself. I've used the Butter Bell for years now and I can't imagine living without one. It keeps the butter at just the right consistency for spreading, and keeps it nice and fresh. I go through butter pretty fast so I've never had it go bad in the bell, but even if I didn't I'd feel confident that the bell could/would keep butter fresh for a reasonable time. It did take a little experimentation to learn how to best pack the butter in so that it stays secure, but once I mastered that, well like I said above, I really can't imagine not having a ready, convenient, source of spreadable fresh butter on hand.I absolutely love this thing! So much better than rock hard butter from the fridge or nasty butter that has been sitting on a plate. 1/3 of a cup of cold water and it stays inside the bell. Change the water every couple of days and it stays fresh, no smells and funky tastes.Not super thick ceramic but not super thin either. Does a great job keeping the butter fresh and spreadable. Easy to wipe down and clean in between refilling. Holds a stick of butter perfectly.We wanted to a butter bell for all the reasons one wants a butter bell - soft fresh butter for toast always ready. And we were happy. Until we dropped the bell from a height of 9" and it broke on our soapstone counter top. Disappointing as I thought I had bought the one and only butter bell we would ever need. I replaced it with a marble butter bell which refuses to hold the butter. I may try one more time but really I should get the message with two failures.I accidentally reviewed this product with a lower rating and want to correct my rating. This is a fun, well made good product. I love my butter bell.i love how soft the butter stays. it’s so easy to spread on your bread. hands down the best butter holder. be sure to change the water often.We have 2. When one is in the dishwasher we have the other in use!The product seems east to use and I’m looking forward to get a lot of use from it.Such an amazing thing to have! Too bad I haven’t heard about it earlier. Thinking of buying another one so I have one for salted butter as well. I saw in some reviews that it holds a pack of butter, actually it holds 125 g (half a pack)I was disappointed to find that the lid doesn't fit flush to the base properly and is slightly warped round the rim of the lid. Little flies can get in. An expensive product when it works. A disappointment when paying good money for something not well made. A great concept for keeping butter out of the fridge though. Just wish it worked better!What is there not to like? It is aesthetically pleasing, and it works a treat!Works very well. The butter lasts ages and is always at the right consistency.The image of the butter crock on this listing photos in the classic white colour appears to be plain and minimal. What I actually received has "Butter" and "Beurre" written on either side, which aesthetically, is not what I wanted. I'm sure the crock will do it's job; however, it is not what I thought I was ordering. Disappointed with this misleading listing.
